On October 5th, the Discovery Channel in collaboration with Quo science magazine honored IFP alum Rodrigo Pérez Ramírez with a 2011 Future Minds award. Given to thirty people who are designing and developing technologies with social impact, the award recognizes “the minds behind the projects that help us understand and transform the world into a better place”, says Quo.
Rodrigo won in the Technology category for designing a program that will translate the Mozilla Firefox browser to Zapotec, an indigenous language still prominent in the State of Oaxaca in southwest Mexico. The idea came to him while studying at the
University of Zaragoza in Spain, where he earned a European master’s in Renewable Energy in 2007 with support from an IFP Fellowship. A native of Oaxaca himself, Rodrigo has worked on implementing projects in the forestry sector, with a focus on renewable energy in rural areas. He is a computer engineer at the University of Chapingo and a leader in bringing digital tools to indigenous populations.
An awards ceremony will be held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.
